NEW DAYS. NEW DECADE. NEW DECISIONS.

Ladies and Gentlemen! HAPPY NEW EVRYTHING!! May every feeling be a great prelude to a wonderful life changing action. We deserve daily inspiration, daily love and daily reasons to smile (which created the concept "fixyaface") . The FixYaFace Inner Beauty/Outer Wellness Blogazine is elated by your return in the newest decade. These new days are for the grateful! If we can recognize The Happenings that are already going in our favor, chances are there will be more immediately. Thank goodness for our ability to choose and to go forth in our decision. I believe this concept can never steer us wrong because we wholly supported that path and move with great expectations as well as inner strength. Leave the naysayers in the old decade, where they are most useful. Let's continue to bring our optimism, strength and humility into this brand new year. As a higher power guides us, our faith reminds us that everything is always on it's way to being better. No matter what. No matter who. No matter where. Many did not make it to see 2010. WE DID! Congratulations! NOW GO DO something grand for someone else. There's a plan for us individually and collectively. Here's to being hopeful as the plan's unfold. Keep me in your kind thoughts as I keep you in mine.

As always, if you are finding reasons to be thankful today then, Love....is Life. LIFE IS GOOD! I bet you'll smile about it, from the inside first. That is how you have fun, have faith and Fix Ya Face:)

Have a wonderful JANUARY!!! IT'S YOURS! See you soon.

-Marcella Precise

A Beautiful Mind welcomes

AIESHA TURMAN (NY)

I currently live in Brooklyn, NY and have lived in the state my entire life. I grew up in western NY, which is a completely different place than the city.

1. If there's a song that reflects your vibe, what would that song be? Do you meditate, pray or/and take time to mentally relax?
If so, what part of the day? For how long?
The song would have to be: Unexpected Delight by Flying Lotus. Yes, I meditate in the mornings. I routinely wake up very early and take that time to set the tone for the rest of the day for about a half an hour. However, I also take the time during the day while walking, or on the train to do walking meditation, which helps me focus my thoughts, intent and desires.

2. Tell us about the BLACK GIRL PROJECT.
The Black Girl Project is a documentary film that shows them, in their own words, as diverse, complex human beings, not the flat, one-dimensional stereotypes that we see portrayed in the modern media.

3. Since it's creation, what new result (s) and/or positive occurrences are you most proud of so far?

I'm currently in the editing phase of the film. On the positivity aspect, I am proud that these young women and girls have told their stories, even the portions that are painful.

4.What early part of your life's journey prompted you to create such a necessary outlet through film?

It would have to be seeing how girls of color were lumped into easy categories. It was like we/they were: smart or troublesome because of how we expressed ourselves outward. I went to school with so many smart black girls who didn't receive appropriate emotional support because they had good grades. It was if academic achievement trumped whatever else was going on in their lives. I was one of those girls. I also saw a blanket salve being applied to the young women seen as troublesome. Black females seem to never be looked at holistically, or as a whole person.

5. With some of your successful experiences allowing you to connect with other purposeful people, what are some of your day to day activities?

I know it is cliche, but young people are the future and some of my most meaningful experience have been through the work I do with them. I lead a weekly college readiness workshop with 12th graders and just completed an 11-week residency with middle school girls in Bushwick, Brooklyn, where we explored their lives using poetry and created a spoken word and dance performance. Of course, there is also the life of mommy, where I chaperone field trips, help with kindergarten homework and make sure teeth are brushed.

6. What do you do for fun? What new fun thing would you like to try?
I am of the mind that whatever you love to do is and can be fun. I have a lot of fun coloring and doing crafts with my daughter, exploring cheap ethnic restaurants in the city -- it's amazing what you can learn about a culture through it's food -- visiting museums and galleries and enjoying quality time with my girlfriends.

7. One thing on my Life List is that...I'd love to live abroad for a prolonged period of time. I've always felt this pull towards Paris, but haven't gotten there yet.

8. What/Who keeps your grounded in this ever changing world?

My five year old daughter, Zenzele. There is nothing like the pure love of a child to let you know what the real deal is.

9. What are 2 qualities that you prefer and respect about your mate at this point in your life?
Nurturing and patience. Lots of patience.

10. Who gave you 1 really good piece of advice early on and what was it?
Some of the best advice I ever received was from a wonderful woman named Gayle Udofa. Gayle was like a second mother and she recently passed away. She repeatedly told me that I need to follow my dreams and my heart regardless of who doubts me. She reminded me of my personal genius and supported me in everything I do. It was Gayle who made me realize that it was important for a young person to know that they have an adult in their corner, someone invested in their success, outside of their immediate family. I strive to do that with the young people I work with and am eternally thankful.

11. What piece of business advice would you like to share?

Do whatever it is you love and turn that into a business. As long as it comes from the heart, from truth, there will be a market for it.

12. What is NEXT for you in 2009 and beyond?
Really developing my company, Super Hussy Media, into a space that highlights the power of women of color. We're starting a podcast in January 2010 called "The Parlor" which will have both video and audio components and will be putting out our first call for written submissions for an anthology which will focus on women's experiences of gaining sexual knowledge.
13. Choose 1: Novel, Biographies, Inspirational Book OR Blog ? Novel, specifically, Jubilee, by Margaret Walker.
Choose 1: Cookies n Cream, Butter Pecan OR Strawberry? Butter Pecan.
Choose 1: Fresh Fruit, Fruit Smoothie OR Fresh Fruit Juiced? Fresh Fruit.

14. What word would best describe you right now? Love.

PAMELA G. WASHINGTON (NY)

1. If there's a song that reflects your vibe, what would that song be? Do you meditate, pray or/and take time to mentally relax? If so, what part of the day? For how long?

A song that would reflect my vibe would be “Keep on Moving” by Soul to Soul. During the day I pray all day. My position can be very stressful and I have to stay centered while working.

2. Tell us about ERASMUS HALL CAMPUS HIGH SCHOOLS.
Erasmus Hall High School is one of the first public schools in the country. It has tremendous history and has graduated some of society’s great leaders, actors, and athletes.

3. Since you've been there, what new result (s) and/or positive occurrences are you most proud of so far?
Erasmus Hall has undergone a major transformation since my arrival. We are now on a campus model, meaning that there exist many schools under one roof. We are currently 5 High Schools and 2 Middle Schools.
At one time there were up to 8 schools on the campus at one time. At one time Erasmus was regarded as one of the premier High Schools in New York City.
As years passed, Erasmus had earned the reputation of an unfavorable institution to receive a High School education. It is the hopes that with the new administration in place, and
innovative academic programming, that Erasmus will once again be an institution of academic excellence.
4.What early part of your life's journey prompted you to go forth this necessary outlet?
At an early age I new that I wanted to assist young people to become great leaders in their own right. I was reared by some of the brightest and most talented black women that I could encounter in this lifetime.
It is those women who nurtured me and showed me that education is not only a necessesity, but also the key to enhancing your place in society.
5. With some of your successful experiences allowing you to connect with other purposeful people, what are some of your day to day activities during the school year?
As an Assistant Principal of Instructional Support Services, it is very imperative that I create a meaningful and successful environment for students to succeed and grow. This is mandatory because my students have been
diagnosed with many disabilities that impede their academic, social, and mental growth. The students that I work with daily have such drive and perseverance to overcome their academic challenges.

Because I am the AP of the 5 High Schools and 2 Middle Schools on my campus, I interact with many different students. Each student has their own story, and each student is unique. Some of my day to day activities vary. One minute I am a hall monitor, another minute I am involved with conflict resolution. But above all, I am an instructional leader who has a true affinity for the students that I work with,
and pray daily that they all succeed.

6. What do you do for fun? What new fun thing would you like to try?

I really do not do too much for fun. I would love to take up golfing. It seems relaxing.
7. One thing on my Life List is ... to open a vocational school for students between the ages of 15-21. So many of our students long for a vocational school where they can learn a trade, and obtain a High School diploma.
I believe that more children would be even more successful with this model

8. What/Who keeps your grounded in this ever changing world?
God keeps me grounded in this ever changing world. Without God nothing is possible!
9. Who gave you 1 really good piece of advice early on and what was it?

My 8th grade English Teacher, Ms. Lynn Scott- John always would say “get it now, so you won’t be left behind later”. That meant a lot to me. You always want to be in a “ready” position, not, “I’m coming”.
So many people have missed out on great opportunities in this life with that attitude.

10. What is NEXT for you in 2010 and beyond?

What’s next for me in 2010 and beyond, is to continue to be the best instructional leader that I can possibly be.
I never know who is watching and may have a great opportunity for me.

11. Choose 1: High Heel, Low Heel OR No Heel? Choose 1: Novel, Biographies, Inspirational Book OR Blog ?

Choose 1: Fresh Fruit, Fruit Smoothie OR Fresh Fruit Juiced?

High heel. My students are not used to seeing me in flats. Erasmus Hall is a large building. It’s my run-way J

I love inspirational books. I am always looking for ways to uplift myself, my staff, my students.
I love a fruit smoothie. No breakfast, lunch, and dinner are usually on the go. A smoothie would give me just enough to make it through.

12. What word would best describe you right now?
A word that would describe me is…..”Progressive”
